Last month there was a rumor that i multiplayer and free-to-play games on the Nintendo Switch would not be affected by the new Nintedo online service (Surcharge). This news has been confirmed with the release of Arena of Valor from the developer, Tencent.

Nintendo then released an official statement on the Switches Online FAQ. Fortnite, which is a free-to-play service, will not require registration for the online service. Here is the confirmation:

"Starting with the 18 September 2018, you will need to sign up for Nintendo Switch Online to participate in the co-op and competitive online features of many first and third-party Nintendo Switch games, including Splatoon 2, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, ARMS and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

"Some games, such as Fortnite, will be accessible online without signing up for that service."

This is good news for the players of these games, and guarantees online communities the chance to grow.
