Gamefreak has recently faced criticism from fans due to the fact that the new titles in the series will not support every single Pokémon species. However, rumors about the "recycling" of models from the latest 3DS titles seem to have been apparently denied.
A recent interview with Famistu translated by Polygon indeed confirmed that the developers are creating the models completely from scratch. The graphic improvements and the new mechanics (Dynamax and Gigamax), however, did not leave the team any other choice than to limit the Pokédex to maintain a certain level of "quality".
Junichi Masuda and Shigeru Ohmori claimed that, given the graphic improvements, it was already difficult to reproduce the entire Pokédex inside Pokémon Sun and Moon, and even more so now with the Spada and Scudo versions.
"Of course, if I could, I wanted to be able to enter all the Pokémon"Said Ohmori. "But it was also a decision I should have made sooner or later. In the end I had no choice but to prefer quality."
Recently Masuda reiterated "the love and passion for the Pokémon brand", and reassured the fans that "even if a specific Pokémon will not be present in Sword and Shield, this does not mean that it will not appear in future games. "
